Interpersonal and Communication Skills

This competency is weighted ~20% of your overall clerkship evaluation.

This competency is best assessed with direct observation or review of written communication.  We have tools to facilitate direct observation by faculty and house staff of your oral presentation skills and patient counseling skills. You optionally can submit samples of your written communication in the form of progress notes and/or discharge instructions for patients. Two of the Entrustuable Professional Activities (EPAs) are covered under this competency and are noted below.

We have provided you an opportunity to get anonymous feedback from your patients about you professional demeanor and communication skills.

 

EPA 5: Document a clinical encounter in the patient record

Clerkship Interpersonal and Communication Skills Objectives

  • Write cogent, clear progress notes that are up to date and document working diagnoses and status of diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic plans.

EPA 6: Provide an oral presentation of a clinical encounter

Clerkship Interpersonal and Communication Skills Objectives

  • Orally present a patient’s history, physical examination, lab data, assessment and plan clearly, concisely, yet with relevant details.
